<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Crawling Eye (AKA The Trollenberg Terror), 1958</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s like if “The Thing from Another World” had less atmosphere and way more monster stuff. There is A LOT going on in this Forrest Tucker vehicle. He and his crew are stalked by living clouds, menaced by frozen corpses, and ultimately battle tentacled, one-eyed creatures, plus there’s a pair of psychic siblings in the mix. It all comes together though, glued in place by an atmosphere of foreboding and a healthy dose of gore.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Day the Earth Stood Still, 1951</image:title>
<image:caption>This movie is perfect. It's noirish but heartwarming, the cast is right on the nose (Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Sam Jaffe, Patricia Neal, Billy Gray, and also Patricia Neal), and the effects are state-of-the-art (circa 1951). I would be content if this replaced the annual It’s a Wonderful Life screening.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Village of the Damned, 1960</image:title>
<image:caption>Polar opposites of The Bad Seed’s Rhoda, these killer kids are the cool, calculating spawn of alien induced immaculate conception. A near flawless adaptation of John Wyndham’s novel The Midwich Cuckoos, “Village” is the standard by which I judge British horror and sci-fi. The child actors deliver chilling performances and George Sanders brings it all together as their de facto handler.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Mask of Satan aka Black Sunday, 1960</image:title>
<image:caption>Mario Bava’s answer to “Horror of Dracula”. The opening execution sequence is nothing short of legendary and the remainder keeps things moving with exploding coffins and goopy gore. I still don’t know if the baddies are witches, or vampires, or some other kind of ghoul but this matters little with so much going on otherwise. The effect of Barbara Steele’s corpse reanimating was achieved in part with poached eggs for eyes and damned if it isn’t effective. The man knew how to make a lot with a little.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Cat People, 1942</image:title>
<image:caption>The first entry in Val Lewton’s string of economical shockers. Jacques Tourneur does more with a shadow than most directors manage with an entire effects team. Simone Simon is our cat person who transforms when anyone else shows an interest in her gentleman caller. I see a grindhouse remake being titled something like “Lust Beast” of “Jealous Rage”. Lewton and co. take a more subtle approach.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Carnival of Souls, 1962</image:title>
<image:caption>I slept on this for years, lumping it in with other bargain bin, public domain crud. Don’t make the same mistake. Herk Harvey’s no budget classic is eerie as hell and has that unsettling awkwardness that only regional filmmaking can produce. Candice Hilligloss plays an areligious church organist who has a near death experience. The director himself is her svelt, ghoulish pursuer. This is mandatory Halloween viewing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Betty Davis and Joseph Cotten compete for the scenery chewing world cup in this sleazy, southern-fried take on “Gaslight”. While it may appear to be a polished studio product, don’t be fooled. This flick is pure exploitation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Fiend Without a Face, 1958</image:title>
<image:caption>An invisible monster typically comes off as a cop-out or budgetary restriction, I promise that isn’t the case here. The monsters are eventually revealed (and they’re great) but the most thrilling moment is a stop motion powered scene of an invisible killer breaking and entering.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Michael Gough plays a lecherous professor who uses extracts from carnivorous plants to enlarge and control a murderous gorilla (that somehow grew from a chimpanzee). <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Giant Claw, 1957</image:title>
<image:caption>Despite the fact that our creature is a bird, I lump this in with giant bug movies as it follows a similar formula. Airplanes are mysteriously being knocked out of the sky only to reveal a mohawked turkey vulture (sort of). The puppet itself is about as rough as a grade school paper mache project but somehow, I genuinely love this movie. It’s charming and audacious in its crappiness. Be warned, the scene depicting the titular creature’s spawn being picked off with a high-powered rifle is pretty unsettling.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Rabid, 1977</image:title>
<image:caption>While “Shivers looks very much like a first film, “Rabid” lurches forward in both style and substance. In Mr. Cronenberg’s second feature length outing, Marilyn Chambers plays an accident victim whose skin graft includes an armpit orifice that injects her victims with a bloodsucking barb. Said victims then become sentient ghouls, ravenous for human flesh. Not exactly a zombie film but not far off. Smooth Eddie always looks good.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Night of the Living Dead, 1968</image:title>
<image:caption>Some directors make their most interesting work when they’re still figuring things out. Some hit the nail on the head on the first try. George Romero set out to make an unlicensed adaptation of “I Am Legend” and ended up inventing the modern zombie film. Some guys have all the luck.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Snow Creature, 1954</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s not a ton going on here and the creature is just a tall beardo that looks like Jebediah Springfield. But if you’re a real diehard for the intersection of horror and noir (I am), stick with it. The second half feels like a spooky episode of “Naked City”.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - War of the Colossal Beast. 1958</image:title>
<image:caption>The unofficial (but really official, they just swapped out the lead actor) sequel to the Amazing Colossal Man. Close to half of its 67-minute run time is footage from the previous film. This is for the best as “Amazing” is a snooze. Despite the thrift, I have a soft spot for this stinker, it was my daughter’s first monster movie fixation, largely owed to a scene involving the beast gobbling down the contents of a sedative-tainted bread truck.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Devil Girl from Mars, 1954</image:title>
<image:caption>A Martian dominatrix lands in an English village with a population of 6 (to capture a man). This flick is super stiff, as 50's British sci-fi tends to be but it's also odd and charming as hell. Patricia Laffan makes a stern Martian mistress. The whole countryside features one tree that was pulled off the Aurora Batman model kit. I love this movie.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Eyes Without a Face, 1960</image:title>
<image:caption>This movie is distinct. We’ve seen plenty of mad scientists kill for a loved one but “Eyes” is a singular product. It’s genuinely terrifying and feels like gothic horror despite the contemporary setting. I wince at phrases like “elevating the genre” but this is in that realm.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - A Bucket of Blood, 1959</image:title>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Wasp Woman, 1959</image:title>
<image:caption>Believe it or not, Roger Corman made a few passable movies early in his career. I might even go so far as to say good. The titular creature looks great and there’s just enough going on to hold your attention for the barely over-an-hour run time.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Them!, 1954</image:title>
<image:caption>Them! sets a template for giant bug movies that will be imitated over and over to varying degrees of success. The creature effects are top of the line but it’s the sound design that clinches the deal. That pulsing chirp will forever give me goosebumps, I mentally call it up from time to time for a jolt. The sandstorms and desert locations add a haunting quality that stands in stark contrast to Edmund Gwenn’s winning warmth. This is the best one, best bug movie. One hundred percent.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, 1965</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a "so crazy I can't believe it exists" kind of movie. It winks at the audience without veering into outright camp while maintaining a sincere sleaziness ala Spider Baby. To top things off, the titular Frankenstein is a melty, Kikaider-like cyborg named Frank.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A loose (L-O-O-S-E) adaptation of Heinlein’s The Puppet Masters. Pretty much empty calories if you’re a fan of 50’s sci-fi. Keep your eyes (or more likely ears) peeled for Leonard Nimoy as the alien toupee’s controller.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Black Cat, 1934</image:title>
<image:caption>My favorite pre-code horror movie. It’s crazier and more vicious than you would expect. Everyone but Karloff seems to think they’re making a silent. Come for the telegraphed performances and stick around for sets that look like Fritz Lang’s winter home.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Curse of the Demon (aka Night of the Demon), 1957</image:title>
<image:caption>Maybe the best example of the intersection of horror and noir. Jacques Tourneur brings the Lewton-esque atmosphere albeit with an actual creature this time around. Dana Andrews is at the height of his powers as a skeptic investigating a death by witchcraft and Niall MacGinnis is chillingly real as his cult leader foil. This one's in my top 5 no question.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Devil’s Rain, 1975</image:title>
<image:caption>Melty people really got to me as a kid. Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist, no thank you. It was extra shocking to see actors I knew in such an oozey gross-out flick. And what’s scarier than Commander McHale as Satan? Not really a proper horror movie and it’s got a serious made-for-tv feel. Still worth a watch. For a double feature, follow this up with Gargoyles.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Flesh Eaters, 1964</image:title>
<image:caption>The Flesh Eaters appears to be Corman level crap on its surface, but there’s way more going on here. War criminal mad scientist on a deserted island makes a monster. Pretty standard. But add some impressive cinematography and gorier-than-you’d-expect special effects and you can overlook the hammy acting and absurd plot. I mean it’s trash, but I really like it.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Mysterious Doctor, 1943</image:title>
<image:caption>A B movie in the proper sense. Part cliffhanger serial, part Scooby Doo mystery. It’s a pretty good opening act to something better. If you’re a 40’s horror fan and have seen everything else, give this a shot.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Island of Terror, 1966</image:title>
<image:caption>In which some oily jiggler looking creatures liquify and drink the innards of the inhabitants of an island village. Expect lots of deflated latex people. A solid entry in the amorphous blob creature oeuvre.</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Revenge of Doctor X (aka Venus Fly Trap aka Body of the Prey), 1966</image:title>
<image:caption>Exploitation trash of the highest order but worth a watch for the creature design. This was distributed by Toei so I have to assume the credit goes to their effects team. If you’re aware of a clean copy, please get in touch. The version I saw looks to be transferred from a vhs tape stored in a humid basement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Werewolf, 1956</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re a noir fan and enjoy a good “fugitive on the run” story then give this a watch. The fugitive just happens to be a werewolf transformed by some less than ethical doctors (rather than a curse). All of that aside this movie is inventive, well-acted, and beautifully shot. There are a few sequences worthy of Lang and Tournier in the mix. My second favorite werewolf movie (behind The Howling).</image:caption>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - Werewolves on Wheels, 1971</image:title>

<image:title>THE MATINEE IDLE - The Bird with the Chrystal Plumage, 1970</image:title>
<image:caption>I came to deeply dislike Tony Musante after performances in “The Incident” and “The Last Run” but he’s really pretty good in this. It’s kind of like how I hated Robert Ryan for years because he was a dick in “The Wild Bunch”. For the uninitiated, the giallo formula works as follows. A random citizen witnesses a murder and even though they have no skin in the game, they circumvent (or unofficially join up with) the police to catch the killer. This never makes a lick of sense but otherwise there would be no movie so, let’s just accept it. Anyway, in true giallo fashion, character’s motivations and actions make absolutely no sense but style literally is substance here. Aesthetics rule in giallo-land and this is about as slick as they come.</image:caption>
