I still don’t know if the baddies are witches, or vampires, or some other kind of ghoul but this matters little with so much going on otherwise. The effect of Barbara Steele’s corpse reanimating was achieved in part with poached eggs for eyes and damned if it isn’t effective. The whole countryside features one tree that was pulled off the Aurora Batman model kit. The sandstorms and desert locations add a haunting quality that stands in stark contrast to Edmund Gwenn’s winning warmth. This is the best one, best bug movie. Dana Andrews is at the height of his powers as a skeptic investigating a death by witchcraft and Niall MacGinnis is chillingly real as his cult leader foil. Not really a proper horror movie and it’s got a serious made-for-tv feel. Still worth a watch. There are a few sequences worthy of Lang and Tournier in the mix. It’s kind of like how I hated Robert Ryan for years because he was a dick in “The Wild Bunch”. For the uninitiated, the giallo formula works as follows. A random citizen witnesses a murder and even though they have no skin in the game, they circumvent (or unofficially join up with) the police to catch the killer. This never makes a lick of sense but otherwise there would be no movie so, let’s just accept it. Anyway, in true giallo fashion, character’s motivations and actions make absolutely no sense but style literally is substance here.
